1. Introduction
Makani Cambridge CIC is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all individuals engaging with our work. This safeguarding policy ensures that all participants, staff, volunteers, and partners are protected from harm, discrimination, abuse, and neglect. We are particularly mindful of safeguarding individuals from marginalised backgrounds, including those from racialised communities, refugees, and migrants.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, partners, and anyone engaging with Makani Cambridge CIC’s programmes, events, and community spaces. It covers safeguarding for adults, young people, and vulnerable individuals.
3. Principles
- Equity and Inclusion: We create safe and equitable spaces where power is shared and everyone feels valued.
- Trauma-Informed & Anti-Oppressive Practice: We prioritise collective care and acknowledge systemic injustices.
- Empowerment & Choice: Participants are encouraged to voice concerns and exercise agency in decision-making.
- Confidentiality & Transparency: Safeguarding matters are handled with sensitivity, respecting privacy while ensuring necessary reporting.
- Zero Tolerance for Abuse: We do not tolerate any form of harm, including physical, emotional, or financial abuse.
4. Recognising and Responding to Safeguarding Concerns
All staff and volunteers must remain alert to signs of harm, abuse, or exploitation, including but not limited to:
- Emotional or psychological abuse (e.g., coercion, intimidation)
- Physical abuse (e.g., assault, neglect)
- Discrimination (e.g., racism, ableism, xenophobia)
- Financial exploitation
- Harmful power dynamics (e.g., misuse of authority, harassment)
5. Reporting Procedures
- Any safeguarding concerns should be reported immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
- Concerns can be raised confidentially via email, phone, or in person.
- If immediate danger is present, emergency services (999) should be contacted.
