Where rhythm meets resistance, and joy becomes collective care.
Makani Cambridge invites you to join our monthly Dabkeh & Drumming Circles — an open, joyful, and grounding community ritual where everyone is welcome. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer, a curious first-timer, or somewhere in between, these sessions are about connection, celebration, and belonging.
Why We Dance and Drum
In today’s culture, joy is often commodified, or postponed.
At Makani, we believe joy is a birthright and a form of resistance. These circles are our way of reclaiming space for collective wellbeing, cultural pride, and embodied liberation. They’re about re-rooting ourselves in rhythms that have travelled across generations and geographies — and reminding each other what it feels like to be fully alive, in community.

What is Dabkeh?
Dabkeh is a powerful Levantine folk dance traditionally performed at celebrations and gatherings. Dancers hold hands in a moving half-circle, stomping and stepping to infectious rhythms — a dance of joy, strength, and unity. The beat is strong, the energy contagious, and no one gets left behind.
What is Drumming?
Drumming is one of humanity’s oldest forms of expression — a way to tell stories, connect hearts, and move through emotion together. You don’t need experience to join; you just need an open heart and a willingness to feel the beat. We’ll provide the drums (or bring your own if you’d like!), and you’ll learn some of the rich, celebratory rhythms of the Levant.
