🎬 Cinema as sanctuary. Stories as collective healing.
Makani Movie Nights are monthly community gatherings where we come together to watch powerful, thought-provoking, and heartwarming films from around the world. More than just screenings, these evenings are about belonging, storytelling, and sparking conversations that nourish our collective imagination.
At Makani, we believe that cinema has the power to open hearts, bridge differences, and centre stories that are often sidelined. Our curated selections reflect themes of migration, identity, mental health, resistance, love, joy, and the quiet courage of everyday life.
Each film is followed by an optional reflective discussion — a chance to sit with what moved us, what challenged us, and what connected us.
What to Expect
- A Film That Speaks
Each month, we screen a feature-length film under 2 hours, often subtitled in English, that explores themes relevant to our lives, communities, and hopes. - A Thoughtful Circle
After the film, we invite those who wish to stay for an open conversation — gentle, reflective, and held with care. You don’t have to be an expert. Just come as you are. - A Warm Atmosphere
Expect snacks, laughter, shared silence, and sometimes tears — all welcome. We create a space where everyone can feel safe, included, and part of the moment.
Why Movie Nights?
- Community Connection
These nights are a soft landing place — a chance to meet others, share stories, and feel less alone. - Cultural Celebration
We showcase films from diverse backgrounds, including Arabic, Black, Asian, Indigenous, and Global Majority communities, and uplift underrepresented voices in cinema. - Wellbeing Through Story
Storytelling is an ancient tool for healing. Films help us feel, process, and reconnect with parts of ourselves and each other. - Collective Joy & Reflection
We believe in slowing down together. Movie Nights are moments of pause, joy, and deepened understanding.
